The dragon boat races quickly became the staple event of River Fest, with the number of teams doubling in the second year of the Festival. This year 16 teams of 20 paddlers will have the opportunity to compete for the titles of fastest boat, most team-spirit, and most pledges raised. This event is a hit with spectators, with crowds flocking to the bank of the Annapolis River to cheer on family and friends.
Over thirty-five teams of twenty-one participants will form throughout our community and beyond. Some will come from corporations, area industries, small businesses, financial institutions, service clubs, and community organizations. Others will be made up of groups of individuals, both local and visiting.
The festival provides an opportunity to celebrate both the Town and its residents through a variety of activities such as an outdoor concert, fireworks, sports competitions, a family fun day and a Dragon Boat Festival.
The Dartmouth Dragon Boat Race League is a series of racing events hosted on Lake Banook. There are three race dates during the summer, and each event takes about 2 hours. Teams race as 10-person crews in a 200 meter heat and a 200 meter final. Crews will then combine (depending on placing) to race as a 20-person crew in another 200 meter event. The day concludes with the very exciting 100 meter heats and final in the cove, again in 20 person crews.
